For decades, the stability of Romania’s National Power System (SEN) relied on conventional coal- and gas-fired generation capable of following the demand curve almost instantaneously and providing the necessary firm capacity. As these fossil-fuel power plants are gradually retired for environmental and economic reasons, while generation from variable renewable sources solar and wind increases significantly, the system’s underlying equation changes fundamentally.
Without adequate dispatchable capacity, adding new megawatts solely in generation creates a paradox: vulnerability during peak-demand hours and overproduction during midday hours.

From Financial Speculation to Technical and Economic Resilience
Recent years have been marked by a race against time to secure straightforward installed generation capacity, often without carefully analysing how the energy produced would be monetised in the market. Today, Romania’s energy market has reached a new level of maturity: periods of negative prices during peak solar generation clearly demonstrate that “single-technology” projects standalone solar projects in particular are experiencing a drastic decline in profitability.
A solar or wind project without integrated storage risks generating electricity precisely when that electricity has the lowest market value. By contrast, BESS integration and hybridisation enable price arbitrage storing low-cost electricity and injecting it into the grid during peak-price hours thereby directly protecting the project’s return on investment (ROI) and bankability.
Structural flexibility is no longer merely a service provided to the National Power System. It has become a fundamental condition for the financial sustainability of every developer and investor operating in the sector.
